We regularly see the unveiling of new and beautiful care homes catering for the elderly with well chosen schemes and stylish furniture, creating wonderful accommodation for those people in care.
But, I can’t help noticing that there is a lot less attention given when it comes to challenging environments with the emphasis being solely on safety and compliance and very little thought given to the design and finished look. The result being dull and lifeless homes full of beige vinyl furniture.
It must be time bridge this gap – manufacturers are now focusing on designing robust and safe furniture with all the attributes demanded for a challenging home and creating ever evolving stylish designs which move us well away from the institutional look of old. This combined with great looking waterproof and microbial fabrics and vinyls, all inherently fire retardant and totally fit for purpose offer challenging care providers the opportunity to create incredible living spaces.
With such a fantastic choice of furniture, fabrics and accessories on the market which can be chosen to compliment well designed colour schemes, all suitable for challenging environments, the days of the same boring institutional look can be over - and that must be something to shout about!
